AFGHANISTAN (The Northern Provinces) 2006
The northern provinces of Afghanistan are inhabited by Tajiks and Uzbeks, and there are also some Pashtun pockets. Even though bloody events happened frequently during Afghanistan's history in this area, at this moment the northern part of Afghanistan is relatively safe, being a little further from the Taliban and extremist threat.In the provinces of Takhar and Badakhshan to the northeast, Talibanism might be a completely strange thing. Taliban conquered Takhar after long bloody fighting, but then they lost their desire to continue their adventure to Badakhshan, which is fortified by high mountains. But then, in Takhar and Badakshan, you will see that 95% of the women are under burqa, covering their face and body completely, and becoming 'invisible'. Burqa has been their culture for hundreds of years. The women who don’t cover are often considered as 'not good women' by the locals.
Badakhshan is one of Afghanistan's opium factories, together with Helmand, Kandahar, and Ghor. In this poor province, which shares a common border with Tajikistan, opium has seemed to have replaced wheat as the staple food in the fields, spread all over the area. The opium fields look very beautiful in July, when the poppies blossom with wonderful violet flowers. The number of drug addicts is very high in Wakhan, one region in the province.
Mazhar e Sharif and Balkh at Afghan's north, sharing borders with Uzbekistan, are the most important pilgrimage sites in the country. People believe that the corpse of Caliph Ali, or Imam Ali for the Shiites, was brought by donkey from Iraq and stopped in Mazhar. Here then a beautiful gigantic mausoleum was built for the Imam. The place is holy as it's believed that even black pigeons will turn to be white after 40 days upon arrival to the site.
The northwestern part of Afghanistan, the provinces of Faryab and Badghis, are inhabited by the Uzbeks, Turkmen, Farsiwans, and Pashtuns. These areas are poor deserts and are often attacked by sandstorms.
Provinsi-provinsi utara Afghanistan didiami minoritas Tajik dan Uzbek, serta beberapa kantong Pashtun. Walaupun peristiwa berdarah sering terjadi dalam sejarah Afghanistan di daerah-daerah ini, namun pada saat ini daerah utara Afghanistan relatif aman, jauh dari ancaman Taliban atau ekstrimisme.
Di provinsi Takhar dan Badakhshan di timur laut, Talibanisme mungkin adalah sesuatu yang sangat asing. Taliban menguasai Takhar setelah berminggu-minggu pertempuran, dan mereka kehilangan nafsu untuk melanjutkan ke Badakhshan yang dibentengi oleh gunung-gunung tinggi. Namun demikian Takhar dan Badakhshan lah tempat di mana 95% perempuannya masih dengan setia membungkus sekujur tubuh mereka dengan burqa. Burqa telah menjadi bagian dari budaya mereka hingga beratus tahun. Perempuan yang tidak menutup wajah mereka sering dinilai yang tidak baik oleh masyarakat setempat.
Badakhshan adalah salah satu penghasil opium terbesar di Afghanistan, selain Helmand, Kandahar, dan Ghor. Di provinsi miskin yang berbatasan langsung dengan Tajikistan ini, opium seakan menggantikan gandum di ladang-ladang yang tersebar di seluruh pelosok pedesaan. Ladang opium tampak cantik di bulan Juli, di mana poppy bermekaran dengan bunga mereka yang indah. Angka kecanduan opium sangat tinggi di Wakhan, salah satu wilayah Badakhshan.
Mazhar e Sharif dan Balkh di bagian utara Afghanistan yang berbatasan langsung dengan Uzbekistan, adalah tempat ziarat terpenting di negara ini. Dipercayai bahwa jenazah Khalifah Ali, atau Imam Ali bagi umat Shiah, dibawa oleh keledai dari Iraq dan berhenti di Mazhar. Di sinilah dibangun mausoleum yang luar biasa indahnya bagi sang Imam, dan dipercaya kesucian tempat ini yang tiada taranya hingga burung merpati hitam pun akan berubah menjadi putih setelah 40 hari datang ke mausoleum ini.
